#8 Discussion Prompt – 7th – Genetic Testing

We have covered a few lessons where a student was deciding whether they should have genetic testing done on themselves after finding out that their family has a gene that can cause a deadly disease, and the student may have inherited this gene.  If you in this situation, would you want to be tested?  State your opinion on this topic (claim) and support it with at least three reasons.

#6 Discussion Prompt 7th – Genetics vs Spanish

A few weeks ago we started our genetics unit.  Since most of you have never had any experience in learning about genetics, this has been a brand new topic, with its own vocabulary (“language”).  In this prompt, compare your learning of genetics to your learning of Spanish.  How are the learning experiences similar, how are they different?  Include and explanation of which  is easier for you to learn and why do you think this is so.

We are learning about cells and their organelles.  You are learning what these organelles are and what they do (function) for the cell.  For this prompt please write about: 1) your favorite organelle and why it is your favorite; 2) the most important organelle and why you think it is important; AND 3) your least favorite organelle and why your don’t like it.

Discussion Prompt # 4 – Favorite System(s) – 7th

We have been studying 11 different systems in the human body. You included all of them on your human body project and have read about each, taken notes about them, done activities and made drawings for many of them.  For this prompt, please share which system or systems are your favorite and explain why you think so.

Discussion Prompt #3 – Surface Area in the body

We have found out that surface area is important to the function of many systems in the body.  Some examples include alveoli in the lungs where gas exchange between the body and the atmosphere occurs; villi in the intestine where absorption occurs; capillaries throughout the body where gas exchange between the circulatory system and the cells occurs.

To answer this discussion prompt, describe which body system most relies on surface area  to carry out its function and how surface area helps this  system.  You may use one of the three examples from above, or give a different example.  This is an opinion question, there is no one correct answer.

Discussion Prompt # 2 HB Project

Some of you have older family members who have already completed the human body project when they were in 7th grade.  If you were a student at Slavens in years past, you have seen the HB projects on display in the lobby.  You will be working with yourself and up to 2 other people from your class (ie 7D or 7S) YOU MUST WORK WITH PEOPLE IN YOUR OWN CLASS – NOT FROM THE OTHER ONE .   What questions or concerns do you have about this project?

Prompt #1 – 7th: Scientific Method

In a several lessons we have reviewed the steps of the scientific method.  According to Sali they are – Traditional Scientific Method: 1) State the problem or question; 2) Propose an explanation, also known as the hypothesis; 3) Collect evidence (conduct an experiment); 4) Analyze data; and 5) Draw conclusions and, if necessary, revise and repeat the experiment.

For this first discussion, state which two of these steps you feel are the most important ones to follow and explain why you think so.
