8th grade Overview

The focus of 8th grade science in DPS is physical science.  At Slavens we add a unit on oceanography to prepare students for their class field trip to Sea Camp in San Diego during the last week of September.

Topics covered: Scientific method and pendulums, oceanography, electricity, magnetism, forces, motion, gravity, energy, chemistry, science history, and metric units.

Textbooks: The official DPS text is Interactions in Physical Science.  This is supplemented with several books from the Prentice Hall Science Explorers series.  Students are expected to bring both types of texts books to class.

Learning Journals:  Students are to have a composition book that they will use as their learning journal.  The first few pages will be for the table of content.  Each entry is assigned a number and title and the student is given a writing prompt for the entry.  These journals are used to help students learn by reflecting and writing about the content that is being covered.
