It has been my pleasure to be your teacher this year.  You are great science students and fun to be around.  I wish you well with your new teacher next year – I want to hear good reports!

HW: Bring a hat, sun screen and water bottle for tomorrow’s picnic.

Monday – Students watched a dvd about Bees with the sub, Mrs. Lowe

Tuesday – we explored the content of owl pellets.

Today – we studied polymers and their environmental impact – studying ooobleck – made with elmers glue and liquid fabric starch.

Tomorrow – year books and the picnic.

Friday – awards assembly, 5-7th group activities to help the newest members to Slavens middle school (current 5th grade) feel that they are part of the group.

Question: How do animals adapt to changes n their food supply?

HW: Finish today’s “Feed the Birds” lab.

In class today: We collected the food chains/webs, then did the activity/lab called Feed the birds (see link:Activity_Feed_the_Birds ).

Question: What are food chains and food webs?

HW: Finish your food web – draw, color and label and answer the three prompts (see below) on the back.

In class today: We discussed food chains and food webs.  Students wrote down their favorite meal, a picture of themselves, then drew all the plants and animals that went into their meal as a food web – all energy arrows pointing to their picture.  On the back they answered the following:

1) Explain how energy flows through a food chain or web (from where, to where)

2) Discuss the role of producers, herbivores, omnivores, carnivores and decomposers in a food chain or web.

3) Compare and contrast food chains and food webs.

My apology to 7th graders, I apparently forgot to put the blog up after the bowlathon last Friday.  Because of my error, your final report for your seed observation is not due until tomorrow.

In class today: Students took the end of course assessment.  We then passed back papers and organized binders (see link: ) then we passed back all the papersat papers for students to choose from for their science portfolio.

Seed experment – final wrap up:

Growing Seeds Final write up must include:(All of this should be in your learning journal!!)

1) A completed Plan or EDD.

2) All Observations including Drawings (minimum of 5) and measurements, Predictions, and Discussion of predictions.

3) Put your measurements in a Data table and make a Graph of your data (tape the graph into your LJ).

4) Write your Conclusion:

State your claim(answering your questions – in third person),

Give your evidence (from your data), and your science reasoning for why this happened.

NOTE: Mrs. Degi has a thumb drive with all the pictures Mrs. Du Houx has taken in science class and in 21st century skills.  You may borrow it during language arts time to print out science pictures for your portfolio.

Question: How are angiosperm and gymnosperm trees similar? Different?

HW: Vocab book is due tomorrow, finish tree exploration by tomorrow, start preparing for Tuesday’s end of year assessment.

In class today: We did our seed experiment observations. We collected the classroom plant and the flower exploration activities.  We then went on a field trip and examined 6 trees on or near the school (see link for direction: Activity_LookingatTrees).

Question: What characteristics do angiosperm flowers have in common?

HW: Finish today’s Flower Exploration lab.

In class today: We reviewed yesterday’s lab – Classroom plants.  For some reason yesterday’s post did not display, so students have until tomorrow to complete this lab.

We then reviewed the parts of flowers.  Students worked with their partner to complete the lab, by drawing, describing and dissecting four different flowers.

QuestionL How do you tell a monocot from a dicot?

HW: Finish the classroom plant lab (12 plant drawings and descriptions) with the final paragraph on notebook paper.

In class today: We discussed bowling etiquette, collected the Gymnosperm and Angiosperm open book quiz.  We then did the Class room plant exploration lab (see linnk:Activity_monovsdicots2014 )

Question: What are gymnosperms and angiosperms?

HW: Finish your quiz comparing gymnosperms and angiosperms.

In class today: We passed back papers and organized binders (see link:18_7thSciBinder_20May2014 ).  We finished up the mosses and ferns lab with the demonstration, reviewed and collected notes BP 140-149, and finished and collected the seeds lab.  We then previewed the sections on Angiosperms (p. 156-161) and Gymnosperms (p. 150-155)in the BP book.  Student worked with their table group to recall information about these two categories of seed plants and wrote them down on paper.  Students chose to either turn these quizzes in at the end of the class period, or take them home and add more to them as part of their homework.

Question: What are the parts of a seed?

HW: Make sure your notes from last night (BP 140-149 ) and your lab from yesterday are completed with quality.

In class today: We discussed yesterday’s lab and the importance of thinking about the reading (AND FIGURES) when doing a reading assignment.  Students then worked with their partner to complete the seeds lab (see link:Activity_SeedsLab ).

Question: What are Similarities and Differences between mosses and ferns?

HW: Read  READ  READ and take notes BP 140-149.

In class today: We reviewed and collected the mushroom lab and the notes on mosses and ferns (see link: Activity_mosses_ferns).  We then did an exploration about mosses and ferns.

Question: What are fungi?

HW: Finish today’s mushroom lab AND read and choice notes from Bacteria to Plants p. 125-128 AND 130-134.

In class today: Students had the first 10+ minutes to make their daily observations about their seed experiment.  Mrs. Du Houx then collected the remaining progress reports and surveys.  She introduced the dissection tools and mats and explained what was expected from today’s lab.  Students then worked with their partner to explore their mushrooms (see link:Activity_Mushroom_Lab ), including answering 4 questions.

Question: How do seeds grow?  What are fungi?

HW: Make sure to get your progress report signed and complete the survey and bring it back.

In class today: We check in progress reports and the survey packets.  We then passed papers back and picked favorites from the genetics unit, the only paper we put in our binders were th unit D – genetics vocab.  We then finished our initial notes from yesterday’s planting day and then made our first observation from our seed experiment.  Finally, we reviewed the notes about fungi and turned them in.

Question: How do seeds grow?

HW: Get progress report signed AND have parents fill out the surveys and if they approve you fill out your part AND read and choice notes Bacteria to Plants p. 95-104.

In class today: We passed out progress reports and discussed the survey. We went over the requirements and particulars for the seed experiment which we discussed last Friday.  Students then worked on their Experimental Design Diagram (EDD), got approval from Mrs. Du Houx and planted their seeds.  After planting they  made their initial observations.  When finished they could start working on their reading and notes assignment.

Mrs. Du Houx was out on Wednesday – students took the unit test, turned in papers and worked on their learning journal entries (see link:20 Genetics Post ).

Thursday – we began a new unit, Ecololgy – starting with new seats.  We then discussed some important vocabuluary words and the Vocabulary picture book project (see link:Ecology + Unit E Vocabulary ).  We did the first two venn diagrams and the first frayer during class (part I).  The due date will be in about two weeks.

Here are some templates for frayer (Frayer_template_PlainForStudents ) and venn (Venn_template_PlainForStudents ) diagrams.  Some students are able to use these – depending on what software you have on your home computer.

Question: How can DNA fingerprinting help find the lost children?

HW: Study for tomorrow’s unit test over genetics.  Also due will be the unit D vocbulary list, Sali 69 from last week and Sali 70 from today.

In class today: We finished the video, Journey of Man, and collected the notes and summaries.  We reviewed for tomorrow’s test (see link: Rev sheet for Unit D sali test).  We then worked on Sali 70 – Finding the lost children.  Most students were able to complete this lesson during class.
